Finding Peace in the Middle of the Storm

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you…”
— John 14:27

When Life Feels Loud

Some seasons feel louder than others. The worries press in, the answers feel far away, and peace can feel difficult to find. Yet even in the middle of the uncertainty, Jesus remains near—steady, faithful, and completely in control.

Some days, peace feels easy. The house is quiet, the coffee is warm, the people we love are doing well, and life seems to make sense.

And then there are the other days.

The days when the phone call comes. When the plans change. When the bills pile up. When someone you love is hurting. When you’ve prayed the same prayer over and over and the answer still hasn’t come.

Those are the moments when peace can feel almost impossible.

But when Jesus spoke the words in John 14:27, He wasn’t promising His disciples a life without trouble. In fact, He knew difficult days were coming. The peace He offered them wasn’t dependent upon peaceful circumstances. It was rooted in Him.

And perhaps one of the most beautiful things about Jesus is that we don’t have to figure out how to find Him in the middle of our storms.

He meets us right where we are.

Think about the disciples caught in the storm. The wind was raging. The waves were crashing into their boat. These experienced fishermen were terrified—and where was Jesus?

Right there in the boat with them.

Sleeping.

The disciples saw the waves and feared they were going under. But the storm that terrified them was never outside of Jesus’ authority.

And when He stood and spoke, even the wind and the waves obeyed Him.

The Jesus who commanded the sea then is the same Jesus who meets us in our storms today.

We don’t have to fight our way through the wind and waves to somehow reach Him on the other side. We don’t have to get ourselves together first. We don’t have to quiet our anxious thoughts enough to earn His presence.

He is already here.

That doesn’t mean He will always calm the storm the moment we ask. Sometimes He changes our circumstances, and sometimes He holds us steady while the storm continues around us. But either way, we are never facing it without Him.

That means the peace Jesus gives us isn’t something we have to manufacture when life feels overwhelming. We don’t have to pretend everything is okay. We don’t have to understand what God is doing. And we certainly don’t have to have tomorrow figured out.

We can simply bring the uncertainty to Him.

Sometimes faith looks like confidently walking forward because we can clearly see the path that God has laid before us.

And sometimes faith looks like sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, whispering, “Jesus, I don’t know what happens next. But I know You. And I trust You.”

Maybe peace doesn’t begin when the wind stops blowing.

Maybe it begins when, in the middle of the storm, we look away from the waves long enough to remember Who is in the boat with us.

What storm are you facing today that you’ve been trying to navigate on your own? What might change if, instead of focusing on the waves, you intentionally reminded yourself Who is in the boat with you?

Let’s Pray:

Jesus, thank You for meeting me right where I am. When the waves feel bigger than my faith and I can’t see what comes next, help me remember that You are already here. Remind me that the things that feel completely out of my control have never been outside of Yours.

Give me Your peace—not a peace dependent on everything going the way I hoped, but the kind of peace that comes from knowing You are with me. Help me take my eyes off the wind and the waves and fix them firmly on You. Thank yYou for being in the boat with me.

I may not know what happens next, Lord, but I know You. And I trust You.

Amen.
